About
Joshua Brew (b. 1993) is an emerging Australian artist living and working on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja (Perth, Western Australia). His practice deconstructs toxic and hyper-masculine ideals within contemporary culture through narrative and symbolism, questioning dualities that lead to rigid societal perceptions of vulnerability and strength.
Drawn to the tension of confronting self-reflection that leads to profound moments of growth, Brew combines meticulous mark-making with a monochromatic palette to draw the viewer into the liminal experiences within this transformation. Brew’s work explores the journey from contracted isolation to connection with the human and more-than-human worlds. By capturing intangible encounters with fragility and introspection, Brew invites viewers to reconsider what it means to be a man today.
Brew holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours, First Class) from the University of Western Australia and a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) majoring in Visual Arts from Edith Cowan University.
